What is Servant Leadership?

"Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

                                                                Matthew 20:25-28

"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

                                                                Ephesians 2:10

What is your role in the Kingdom?

Your role in the Kingdom is usually found at the intersection of: your passions, your gifts, your personality style

While God has equipped us all with these of three traits, it is sometimes difficult to determine what they are and their point of intersection.

Passions - Passions involve strong feelings, preferences, fascinations or special concerns about a people group (i.e. children), people with needs or a world or community issue.

Gifts – As described in Roman 12:3-8, Gifts are often referred to as spiritual or motivational gifts and include the gifts of teaching, serving, prophecy, mercy showing, leading, encouraging and giving.

Personality Style - It is obvious that God does not use a cookie cutter to create people.  He makes us all unique and that includes our own personal style.  God loves variety and He made introverts and extroverts – He made people who love routine and those who love variety – He made some “thinkers” and some “feelers” and some “doers”.  How did He make you?

Servanthood

In addition to giving, serving is a significant component of your calling in the Kingdom.  The following offers further thoughts on service:

  • What is motivating you?  Is it a sense of obligation or concern what others might think?  Or, do you want to serve because of obedience to God?
  • What is your attitude of service?  Is it not my job or whatever it takes?
  • What is your spirit of service?  Is it me-first or I did it? Or, is it God-first or God did it through me?
  • How relational is it?  Are you merely writing a check or are you making the best use of your gifts, passions and personality to get personally involved? (for a few, writing a check may be your role)
  • How sacrificial is it (both financial and time wise)?  Are you totally self focused?  Are you totally focused on family and children?  Are you totally focused others and God?
  • How integrated into your life is your service?  Do you set aside one hour or day a month or is it something you do everyday as part of your normal routine?
  • In summary, is your service self seeking or God-glorifying?

The Spiritual Gift of Giving

Giving - the ability to contribute money and material resources to the work of the Lord with cheerfulness and  liberality.

While giving is a spiritual gift, your passions, spiritual gifts and personality are usually determinants of who you give to.  One of the six principles in Randy Alcorn's book The Treasure Principle: Discovering the Secret of Joyful Giving is My Heart Always Goes Where I Put God’s Money.
